Shimmy Sistah Takes a Chance

Shimmy Sistah Takes a Chance

No, No, and No again! I did NOT take a chance on , but if falling in holy matrimony with Chance the Rapper counts, then so be it!

Chance the Rapper Concert Experience

So besides mastering Buddha Bowls and working out 5 days per week, one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to date my mommy. Thankfully, and unlike my previously failed New Year’s Resolution commitments, I’ve been pretty steadfast with this one!

Chance the Rapper

Chance the Rapper Ticketmaster

To kick the New Year off correctly, we set our sights on all things lively, enjoyable, and fun! Our first stop was the Honda Battle of the Bands where the only thing missing was Nick Cannon himself. Next up, we crossed off a bucket list item by seeing DL Hughley in concert. As if having our funny bone tickled by DL wasn’t enough, we also managed to see Chris Rock at the last minute. And to top it all off, we opted for some good ole downward dog and warrior 3 poses during our Hip Hop Yoga session with Miss Jaimee Ratliff.

Lakewood Ampitheater

Now some would be exhausted by now, but certainly not us! As a matter of fact, we just returned from Chicago’s own 79th Street by way of ATL’s Lakewood Amphitheater when we went to see CHANCE THE RAPPERRRRRRR! 😛  😛

To be nice, I’ll give y’all the benefit of the doubt seeing that I’ve been MIA for awhile, but for the past year or so, I’ve been obsessed with this man – like literally obsessed. My baby brother introduced me to him years ago, so I’ve been following his every move for quite some time now. It’s practically to the point where even Bieber has had to step aside!

Anyways, due to my most recent obsession, I thankfully (and after hitting the refresh button 21 times) managed to get tickets to his concert!!! Of course, rounding up my mother to go was next on the agenda – to which she eagerly obliged! And now FOUR MONTHS later, we were FINALLY able to see our Chano riding through the streets – we be like ♪ “there he go!” ♪

Chance the Rapper Chano

Did we cry, smile, dab, and leave feeling encouraged, inspired, and empowered? Yes! There’s more to it though…Honestly, his presence…his words and aura bestow a sort of solace upon you. Surely, you’ve felt it as you gaze at his performances on TV and jam to his tracks on Spotify, but it’s nothing like actually being there.

Be Encouraged Tour

He’s such a wonderful individual who inspires the masses and as you can see, his influence is definitely gaining traction. Hopefully, with these snippets of my adventures with him, you’ll be encouraged to jump on his bandwagon before it’s too late! Don’t worry, I won’t judge! 😉

Were y’all lucky enough to get his tickets before they sold out in 24 hours like I did? Show me the pics! Send me the highlights! Our memories will last a lifetime!!! 🙂

Over 100 Best Books for the Consciously Woke

Amid the endless yet most reprehensible rhetoric, countless vigils, cries for justice, and marches on main, we have a nation of uniformed individuals quick to memorize Shirley Caesar’s menu just in time for the holidays.

Now don’t get me wrong, greens, beans, potatoes, and tomatoes all sound quite appetizing, but realizing and placing value on our past while attempting to prevent it from becoming our future must remain priority.

To get us started, I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a list of over 100 Books for the Consciously Woke to enjoy. From the autobiographical memoirs and poetic prose to the revolutionaries lending their expertise on how to lead movements that actually beget social equality and justice, this list has it all. It will continue to inspire those already aware and awaken those who are not.

♣ Single Sistah Soldier Brigade ♣

CALLING ALL CADETS! Sergeant Shimmy is here to report for duty and her first order of business is to share why she’s content being single! Now before y’all start drawing conclusions and second guessing who you know me to be, let me issue a disclaimer: […]

I’m NOT Registered to Vote…

I’m NOT Registered to Vote…

Those are the words my little brother uttered to me the other day…

Should I Register to Vote?

Now if you know me, then you know that confusedly following behind while badgering him about this oddity was next on my agenda (because letting him walk away unscathed just didn’t seem right…). He didn’t let that last for long though. With the quickness, his nonchalant attitude towards exercising his rights and protecting his liberties basically stopped me dead in my tracks.

Am I getting old, I pondered? Was he a Bernie or Bust supporter and I hadn’t realized it yet? For the life of me I just couldn’t figure out WHY my little brother wasn’t registered to vote and seemed to have no intentions of even doing so.

I mean, had he not heard of Bloody Sunday? …he attends an HBCU in Alabama for crying out loud… Did he forget about how our parents were barely in their pre-teens when the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was finally passed? Or was he onto something???

Perhaps it was the electoral college’s influence that swayed his decision, or maybe it’s the fact that no matter who sets foot into the Oval Office, the Senate nor House will never let him/her truly fulfill and keep all promises they vowed to keep while campaigning for our votes. And we can’t forget how underrepresented African Americans are coupled with the many times we are slighted even as we fight for justice as advocates of peace and equality.  Or, like I stated earlier, maybe he’s onto something…

Thankfully, after seeing me fret over reasons and wondering if he was, in fact, smarter than the average bear, he finally decided to elaborate a bit! Phew!

“They’re robots.

Figureheads who never truly let you dig deep. They put on this front and portray something/someone they are not. And thankfully, social media and various other resources help us capture some of this transparency yet to be seen from any of the candidates we have to choose from.

Oh yeah, and another thing…they also try to emulate Obama which simply cannot be done. He was, is, and always will continue to be genuine with his approaches to how he governs and cares for the American people. The only way they can possibly duplicate his style is by being themselves and showcasing their personal elements to us – the American people. Don’t make Spotify playlists in order to get the young vote, stop using useless rhetoric for TV time, and don’t, all of a sudden, start hanging around Blacks while quoting our vernacular in order to pander the minority vote as well – it’s just lame.

…and sis, I’ve been lazy! Of course I’m going to register to vote!” 😉

Pretty smart kid, isn’t he? Not as smart as me, but his intellect will do…for now at least!

Honestly though, I think the little tyke has a point. Even though he does have intentions on registering to vote, his lack of enthusiasm stems from the same sentiments you and I all share. Is Trump as evil as his hairline? Is Hillary always on espionage? Will our nation regress if one or the other is elected? Do they really believe that #BlackLivesMatter? Or is it all a ploy? A façade to get our votes and have their way with us once in office?

registering to vote, i'm not registered to vote, why i'm not registering to vote, vote or die, reasons to not register to vote, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, 2016 election

To be nice, I’ll guess I’ll go ahead and give these candidates the benefit of the doubt by saying that maybe their antics thus far were to simply get us talking. Ya know, generate buzz. To get the votes needed in order to get to where they are now. If this is indeed the case, then they have around 70-odd days to utilize their platforms to address the real concerns of Americans and foster even more progressive change for the betterment of our nation.

Am I being too optimistic? Giving them too much credit? You’re probably right, but a girl can daydream, right?! 🙂

Raise your hand or, better yet, comment below on your thoughts about our upcoming election. My brother and I can’t wait to read your responses!

Carnival Cruise Lines Paradise

So I’m sure ya’ll remember me boasting about my upcoming journey with the chicest shoes to match. Well, we’ve anchored and I’m finally ready to share the scoop on all things skiff and so much more!

Now Lord knows I’m always ready for a challenge and taking the road less traveled just happens to be my mantra. However, when Mother Nature is in the mix, I tend to back off and let her do her thang. Carnival Cruise Lines doesn’t see it that way though…

Despite Tropical Storm Colin bringing forth forceful winds and surging waves to the Coast of Tampa and the entire Gulf, Carnival Cruise Paradise mustered their might and opted to continue our scheduled excursion abroad.

Did this come with a few complications? Of course! 😛 Not only did we have to remain at the Port of Tampa for an extra day (until the storms subsided), but because of this delay, we also had to miss out on visiting the Grand Cayman’s all together. 🙁 This detour of distress did afford us a couple of extra hours in Cozumel and a few extra bucks credited to future cruises booked through Carnival; however, those gestures weren’t enough for the dismayed guests (including ourselves). It just dampened things a bit, ya know?

On the other hand, things weren’t totally adrift. The crew, maintenance staff, and food were impeccable!! 😀 In fact, the propulsion system had some major difficulties, but with the assistance of the crew and succulent entrees, we barely even noticed!

Overall, I’d say the trip was a mild success. The absence of cell service and lack of internet (unless you forked out the $25 per day for it) definitely provided some much needed time for self-reflection and fostered opportunities to meet people organically. I even got my mother out of her mussel shell to help me perform karaoke LIVE to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies’ which was undoubtedly a hit!

So tell me, where are y’all headed this summer? Ever been on a Carnival Cruise? Encountered Colin? Share your stories below!

That’s right!!!! I’m ELATED to announce that after 3 months of searching to my heart’s content, I’ve finally found an actual job and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

Now despite my elation and overall unbounded happiness, I must admit, there were times where I felt discouraged, incompetent, and just downright dumb due to the harsh realities that play a role in the entire job search process. With my family, friends, and the accompaniment of Baby Jesus, however, I overcame these insecurities and feelings of despair. Cuz let’s face it, walking around with dashed hopes and dreams will TOTALLY hinder me from embarking on my journey to basically becoming the World’s BESTEST Professor of Economics!

¿Having Halitosis Problems?

¿Having Halitosis Problems?

natural cures for halitosis organic cures for bad breathTHE DILEMMA

Okay Shimmies, I admit it. I have BAD BREATH. I’m not kidding either. My breath is rank, stank, and all those other adjectives used to describe “smelly’. It’s like whatever I eat seems to just settle on my tongue – breeding stinky breath germies. 😛

Thankfully, my friend Brandon, came to my rescue!!! 🙂 Hoping to cure my unforgiving bad breath, Brandon sent me some yummy Rosemary Mint and Coconut Ginger flavored mouthwashes by Nature’s Artisan.

Nature’s Artisan is not your typical oral care solution. Priding itself in being able to intertwine the wonders of nature with the discoveries of science, Nature’s Artisan freshens your breath using au naturale ingredients and modern approaches – including Xylitol which is basically a fancy and much better alternative to sugar! 🙂

I’ve been using this mouthwash for the past few weeks now and I must say that my expectations have been met! Being a fan of organic products makes me a tad biased, I know, but honestly, my halitosis hitches have been cured! 😀

Not only does this mouthwash taste wonderful and freshens my breath without all of the harsh ingredients featured in other competing brands, but my fresh breath actually LASTSSS! No joke! I can brush, floss, then rinse with my Nature’s Artisan mouthwash all before hitting the hay to get my 8-hour slumber, and when I awaken, my breath is still bearable!

That’s right! After gargling and swishing for about 30 seconds, my mouth is all tingly and my breath is fresh for hours, all the while experiencing little to no sensitivity! 🙂

Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourselves by clicking here!! Tell em Shimmy Sistah sent ya!

Have a bad breath remedy you swear by? Be sure to leave them below because I’m sure some fellow Shimmies (and I) would love to know! 😉

The Doctor is In

I FREAKING GRADUATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s right!!! Your very own Shimmy Sistah is a bonafide, real live doctor! (The 1st in my family too! 😉 ) This past December (the 11th to be EXACT), I graduated from the illustrious New Mexico State University with my doctoral degree in Economic Development!

Now does this mean I can prescribe your meds for your tumultuous tummy? Of course, not! But can I decrease inflation rates while summoning the GDP Gods as I makeshift ways you all can save more than you spend @ Forever 21? Well, DUH!

Break a Leg…or Maybe 2

To say the least, performances are my passion. From the practices and preparation, to the primping and prancing – there is nothing I enjoy more than shimmying with my Shimmy Sistahs!!

This past year, we performed for children, our beloved Pagan Festival, Hallow’s Eve, and we even managed to get a charity event in there as well! Now, and as you can all see, we had a great time and we looked even better, but instead of focusing primarily on just our beatitudes and bellies, we remained fixated on working together, strengthening our sisterhood, and collaborating with local organizations and the community. These principles are essential and quite crucial for any group, troupe, or dance team and thankfully, our dedication, efforts, and love of dance paid off (10 fold)!! In fact, our persistence afforded us a chance to be featured as a 2015 SPOTLIGHT SHOUT-OUT HIGHLIGHT for our local community!

You guessed it!!! Shimmy’s a celebrity so watch out Kimye! 😉

How did the GRINCH steal Christmas?

With a scimitar, of course! 😉 JK, Shimmies!

These holidays were actually filled with plenty of family, festivities, food, and fun! Not only did I go home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I managed to enjoy my time there as well!

You see, my previous holidays have always been spent either studying, writing, or resting but THIS year, I dabbed with my cousin, met my Knight in Shimmying armor, play-dated with my mommy, and became Grinch-y Green with the utmost envy @ this dude! 🙂

it was………LIT.

What more can I say? She makes us say “uhhhhh, UHHHHH. Nah-Nah-nahnah!” My Shimmy Sistah, Jordan, pushes us to the limit – like she LITERALLY makes us her “No Limit Shimmy Soldiers!” 😀

First, she had us learning new techniques. Easy. Then she suggested swords. Simple. Next, she starts with this whole “tribal” thing. No (Keith) sweat. THEN all of a sudden, I’m guessing because we never stopped her in her tracks before, she springs this whole “Let’s dance with FIRE” idea on us. FREAKED. US. OUT. 😐

I mean, WHO in their right mind does this? Turns out, just about every belly dancer out there…excluding me…until NOW!

¿Now what?

Besides watching All about the Benjamins and grubbing out on all of the yummiest candies my little tummy can take, I’ve just been applying for jobs, wigging out with Wendy Williams, and praying my nation votes for anyone but #Trump! 🙁 Oh yeah, I’ve also been plotting (like Pinky and the Brain Brain….) on improved blogging topics, volunteering opportunities, and all things belly dance worthy – implying that sticking around for the journey should be a given!!! So stay tuned, Shimmies!!! I’ve got LOTS more in store like my beloved H&M! 😉

Yeah, there a few who think they are cute, many loathe them, some couldn’t care less and, of course, we have those that, in a drunken stupor, would attempt to motorboat them regardless of their great divide! But are their ANY perks to having boobs whose sizes reflect our scholastic GPA’s? I mean, besides being a part of a REMARKABLE Itty-Bitty Committee, there HAS to be something us members have to look forward to, right? Well, duh! 😉 Shimmy’s top seven are below!

1. Keith No-Sweat

Breaking a sweat in the gym never felt so good especially since we don’t have to lift and wipe excess perspiration from under our Beautiful Bouncing Buddahs!

2. No bra? No problem!

That’s right, Shimmies! Don’t feel like strapping on? No worries! Come as you are – bra-less and unrestricted! You feel great and look even better! 😉

3. Self-Check in a Cinch

Don’t wait until October to check your Sweater Stretchers especially since it won’t take long at all!

4. Stuck like Glue

Wanna stargaze? Enjoying the crazed visuals you depict as you paint the sky with your imaginative cloud creations? Well, do that without worrying about your boobies falling prey to your armpits! Don’t believe me? Put any bountiful Shimmy to the test!

5. Jumpin’ Jack your Rack

Being top-heavy is NO issue for those who have to stuff with tissue!

6. Size Small, Please!

Not only do our favorite boutiques stay stocked with our size, but they often place those items on sale! Better bargain and bang for your buck, when 32B is the size of your cup! (See what I did there?) 😀

7.  Call of Booty

Oftentimes, when we lack in one arena, we are more than able to compensate in another…it’s just life! With that being said, our bodies are no different! So don’t fret because your rack is lack! Turn around, Shimmies! Show them your booty’s got back!

So there you have it! How did the Chairman of Itty-Bitty do? Now I’m sure I missed a few perks, so I’m gonna need my Shimmies to list more below, but in the meantime, remember that the validity of your bodies, no matter their shape, size, or stature, should NOT be given the stamp of approval by the social constructs our society places on them. I don’t know about you, but I treasure my Gerber Servers no matter their size and YOU. SHOULD. TOO.

<3 May the 14th be with YOU! <3

Yeah? No? Okay…well, I tried…as usual! 😉

GL – George Lucas, to me, is considered to be the renown archenemy of the AWESOME OPOSSUM Planet of the Apes franchise since the late 70’s. Why have I given him this alias, however? Well, it’s only because he masterfully managed to create the iconic Star Wars Trilogy that would rival my simian homies for decades to come. How shady is THAT? And let’s not forget to mention how he has also donated over $1 million to aid in the majestic construction of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial, established his own nonprofit organization, and pocketed a whopping $4 billion when he successfully sold his filming company to none other than Walt Disney! (Who knew Walt had THAT much money? Does he have a son or nah?…) 😉 But seriously though, what hasn’t Lucas done? All that’s left to do is avenge Ultron and Robert Downey Jr. claimed that feat last weekend!! He could always star our beloved Lupita in the next installment of … wait he did that too! Jeez Lucas! Can you like STOP being so great?!?

<3 Facebook – “Helping people remember birthdays since 2004!” <3

MZ – Need I say more? Mark Zuckerberg, in the most unconventional and unprecedented ways possible, has become a more than influential token of our past, present, and future generations to come! From the memes we share, to the annoying “Play Trivia Craaaaack NOW” notifications we receive every 12 mins, Facebook is an essential, and oftentimes necessary, time consuming component of our daily lives. For example, because of Mark’s ingenuity, we can now squabble endlessly down our News Feeds while waiting in line to place our orders for crab rangoons, face sleepless nights because our poor elbows are trying their darnest to keep our celly’s from splatting our contoured noses, and we, or course, luxuriate and bask in the essence of being able to chime in on where Stacy went, who accompanied her, and if her ex knew about it! 😀 HA! I just made a funny! 😉
